Every South African personal loan needs four things: a valid SA ID, a bank account in your name, verifiable regular income, and enough affordability headroom to pass the mandatory NCA assessment. Everything else — age bands, employment length, profession exclusions — varies by lender, and the unadvertised criteria are what cause most "mystery" declines.
The Universal Requirements
- SA ID document — 13-digit ID; citizens (some lenders accept permanent residents). Ages 18–70 depending on lender
- Bank account in your own name — for payout and debit-order repayment
- Verifiable income — payslips or 3 months of bank statements (the no-payslip route)
- Affordability headroom — income minus expenses must absorb the repayment; the assessment explained
Lender-Specific Criteria (The Part That Varies)
| Lender | Ages | Employment | Income proof | Exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primeloans | 20–64 | Formal, 3+ months | 3 months' income statements | Self-employed, pensioners, military, legal profession |
| Creditbar | 18–65 | Any with regular deposits | 3 months' bank statements | None published |
| LendPlus | 20–64 | Formal, 3+ months | 3 months' income statements | Same as Primeloans |
| Century Financial | 18–70 | Any — individual assessment | Affordability assessment | None published |

Prepare Once, Apply Smart (5-Minute Checklist)
- Download 3 months of stamped bank statements (PDF from your banking app — not screenshots).
- Check your credit report free — active arrears decline you everywhere; know before you apply (how).
- Pick the lender whose criteria you meet — the table above, or one matched application that pre-screens for you.
- Know your amount's legal cost cap — compare the quote against loans by amount before signing.
The Bank-Statement Standard, In Detail
Since statements decide most applications, know exactly what "good" looks like to an affordability model: income regularity (similar amounts, similar dates — even for informal income), expense honesty (models estimate living costs from your actual spending, so a statement full of luxuries reads as low spare capacity), debit-order hygiene (every bounced debit is a red flag heavier than most credit-report lines), and gambling caution (many models flag betting transactions; three clean months beats explaining). The statement is your CV — and unlike a CV, it can't be written the night before. Start the 3-month clock now if any of those are issues.
Requirements for Special Cases
- No payslip / self-employed: statements replace payslips at the right lenders — full route in loans without payslip
- Grant income: permanent grants count as income; SRD alone rarely passes — see SASSA loans
- Ages 18–19: only Creditbar and Century accept under-20s; bring the same statement standard
- Impaired record: requirements don't change, but lender choice does — who considers bad credit
- Under debt review: no requirements list helps — new credit is illegal until clearance (the rules)

Four universals: a valid 13-digit SA ID (ages 18–70 depending on lender), a bank account in your own name, verifiable regular income (payslips or 3 months of bank statements), and passing the NCA affordability assessment. Individual lenders add criteria — employment length, age bands, and profession exclusions covered in our lender reviews.
Typically just your ID number and bank statements — modern lenders verify identity and income digitally. Have ready: your SA ID, 3 months of stamped bank statements (PDF from your banking app), and your bank account details. Payslip lenders may request your latest payslips.
No law sets one. The NCA affordability assessment is relative: your income minus living expenses and existing debits must cover the repayment. Practically, R3,500+ monthly income supports small loans (R500–R1,500); R6,000+ supports the R4,000 tier.
Meeting entry criteria gets you assessed, not approved. Common hidden blockers: active arrears on any account, too many recent enquiries, bounced debit orders in your statements, or category exclusions lenders don't advertise (self-employed, pensioners, military at some lenders). Our reviews publish those exclusions; more in why loans get declined.
